ARTICLE 7. The Holy Spirit and the Christian Life
Galatians 5:16-26
God’s presence as seen in the old testament
-Moses and the burning bush
-Abraham and the 3 that visited him on the way to Sodom and Gomorrah
-Prophets
-The Lord’s Temple
Joel 2:28-29 “Then, after doing all those things,
I will pour out my Spirit upon all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams,
and your young men will see visions.
In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on servants—men and women alike.”
Acts 2:1-18
Ephesians 1:13-14 And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, he identified you as his own[a] by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago. The Spirit is God’s guarantee that he will give us the inheritance he promised and that he has purchased us to be his own people. He did this so we would praise and glorify him.
The Destruction of the Temple
1 Corinthians 3:16-17 Don’t you realize that all of you together are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God lives in[a] you? God will destroy anyone who destroys this temple. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As the Scriptures say, “He traps the wise in the snare of their own cleverness.” And again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise; he knows they are worthless.”
*Would you do that, watch that, or say that Jesus was sitting next to you?
*What are we allowing ourselves to see, think, and do while in the presence of God?
Galatians 5:16-26
Why is it so important to have the Spirit of God dwelling within us?
Galatians 5:17 The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.
Romans 7:14-8:4
Ephesians 6:12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
Romans 8:9-10 But you are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that those who do not have the Spirit of Christ living in them do not belong to him at all.) And Christ lives within you, so even though your body will die because of sin, the Spirit gives you life because you have been made right with God.
Galatians 5:16-26
